Lühtrisäras läbi taastumise/ In the chandelier-light through the recovery

My longtime friend has a demanding hobby of knowing everything about human muscles-tendons-connective tissue-mental health balance and cooperation. To my unbelievable bliss, she has decided to implement her respective knowledge on me (I’ve written about her and her exercises here before).

She took me building certain muscles and connections to her very well-equipped gym in the spring. While I felt quite indifferent about the gym (especially the machine-part of it) before the accident as I didn’t really know the true purpose of each machine, I’ve come to enjoy it quite a bit the more I learn.

As my friend is truly a “hot commodity” in the personal trainer shelf, her calendar is overbooked constantly and she squeezes me in some irregular blank spaces, hence I have no certain regularity in my training sessions. Still, even sometimes is so much better than none at all – and I’m grateful for these sessions. Due to some irregularity, I am gracefully forgiven if I’m not completely sure which muscle needs to pump itself up and how the abs/buttocks/spine/head/knees need to be positioned. After the Midsummer’s Day the gym was like a blank sheet of paper for me and everything seemed never-heard-of-before. Unbelievable. I was certain of course that this amazement and forgetfulness is purely due to my brain injury but my experienced friend assured this to be happening to many of her gym-clients (who don’t have a brain injuries). The “lamp” often takes its time to shine some light. The reason is rather in the different levels of understanding and information entering the muscles (for the first month, the brain is just starting to adapt and, by firing information into the muscles, does things as correctly as it can, but then the understanding and precision of the performances deepen – the muscles also have to learn the new “journey”. This was an incredible relief for me – it’s the same for others! Fortunately, new lamps are coming on more and more over time – so soon I’ll be dancing through life like in a bright, chandelier-filled ballroom 😉

I actually have an alternative theory about the lamps illuminating muscles – just like rereading an old book sometimes feels completely new, precisely because of the reader’s own experiences have changed and they notice/understand completely new aspects, this may also apply to muscle work. We simply were not able to consider specific effort or directing attention somewhere as needed before. With new knowledge and feelings, motivation also grows quite strongly (in June, the doctor threatened me with a possible need for foot surgery, and right at the first gym workout following that, my friend cheered in a very surprised manner: “oh, what a motivation!!!,” so the fear of death brings out some of the stronger colors).

Now, at the end of July, as part of the Saaremaa Opera Days, while walking on the paths of my ancestors and on the farmsteads of the island, while searching for the path at the entrance to the Kahtla cemetery very slowly on the pebbles, I suddenly understood – if only for a moment – how to lift my left foot ahead of my right without dragging half the pavement with me. As is often the case with these moments of sudden illumination, I moved in a somewhat less charming way on the floor of the opera house built in the courtyard of the Kuressaare castle in the evening and at night. But for me, it is a victory that the lamp showed light for once (= the wires made a connection at some point), the lamp still works!

Almost everyone has probably dealt with the connections and short circuits of a tangle of wires at some stage in their lives (this is especially acutely felt when writing an exam), but let’s trust physics – “if it makes a connection once, it is not completely broken” – and biology- “a successful movement once shows that it can appear again.”

I wish new lamps to light up your every summer evening!
